Orange Rhodactis Mushroom

The Orange Rhodactis Mushroom is a stunning and beginner-friendly soft coral that brings rich, warm color and a velvety texture to any reef tank. Rhodactis mushrooms — also known as hairy or fuzzy mushrooms — are beloved for their bold coloration, hardy nature, and the way they slowly pulse and expand throughout the day. This orange morph is particularly eye-catching, with a deep, saturated hue that glows under reef lighting.

Coral Details

  • Genus: Rhodactis sp. (Mushroom Coral / Corallimorpharian)
  • Morph: Orange
  • Care Level: Beginner — one of the most forgiving corals in the hobby
  • Growth Form: Disc-shaped; encrusting; will spread and reproduce over time

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (very adaptable)
  • Water Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.023–1.026 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 7–12 dKH (tolerant of a wider range than SPS)
  • Nitrate: Tolerant of elevated levels; thrives in nutrient-rich systems
  • Phosphate: Tolerant; does not require ultra-low nutrient conditions

Lighting

Low to moderate lighting — PAR 20–100. Rhodactis mushrooms are highly adaptable and can thrive under a wide range of lighting conditions, from low-light nano tanks to moderate reef setups. Avoid intense direct light, which can cause them to shrink or bleach.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, indirect flow. Mushrooms prefer calmer water; strong direct flow will cause them to curl up and detach from the rock.

Feeding

Rhodactis mushrooms are capable of capturing and consuming small meaty foods. Occasional target feeding with mysis shrimp or Reef-Roids will accelerate growth, though it is not required for survival.

Compatibility

  • Aggression: Low to moderate — can sting neighboring corals if they expand into them. Provide a few inches of clearance. Will spread over time and can overtake slower-growing neighbors.
  • Reef Safe: Yes, with proper placement
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates; avoid fish known to nip at mushrooms
