Laffy Taffy Goniopora (flowerpot)
Laffy Taffy Goniopora (Flowerpot Coral)
The Laffy Taffy Goniopora is a playfully named but seriously stunning flowerpot coral that brings a burst of candy-like color to any reef tank. This Goniopora sp. morph features long, swaying polyps in a delightful mix of pinks, purples, and greens — reminiscent of the colorful candy it's named after. Like all Goniopora, it creates a mesmerizing, garden-like display as its polyps extend and sway with the current, giving the coral an almost anemone-like presence.
Coral Details
- Genus: Goniopora sp. (Flowerpot Coral)
- Morph: Laffy Taffy
- Care Level: Intermediate to Expert
- Growth Form: Massive / columnar; polyps extend 2–4 inches
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (mature, stable reef)
- Water Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: 2–10 ppm (benefits from slightly elevated nutrients)
- Phosphate: 0.05–0.10 ppm
Lighting
Moderate lighting — PAR 75–200. Goniopora can adapt to a range of intensities but should be acclimated gradually. Mid-tank positioning is typically ideal. The Laffy Taffy's pink and purple hues are most vivid under blue/actinic spectrum.
Water Flow
Low to moderate, gentle and indirect. Goniopora polyps need to sway freely — strong direct flow will cause them to retract and stress the coral. Random, indirect flow is preferred.
Feeding
Supplemental feeding is one of the keys to long-term Goniopora success. Target feed 1–2 times per week with Reef-Roids, Polyp-Booster, phytoplankton, or similar coral foods. This significantly improves health and longevity.
Compatibility
- Aggression: Low — long polyps but not particularly aggressive; maintain a few inches of clearance from neighbors
- Reef Safe: Yes
- Tank Mates: Compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates; avoid fish known to nip at coral polyps
Notes on Photos
Photos taken under reef/blue lighting. The candy-like pink and purple coloration is most vivid under actinic spectrum; under white light the coral displays rich, warm tones.
