Hawaiian Yellow Tang

Few fish command a reef tank like the Hawaiian Yellow Tang (Zebrasoma flavescens). Sourced directly from the pristine waters of Hawaii, this iconic species brings an unmistakable burst of sunshine yellow to any saltwater aquarium. Its bold color, graceful swimming, and active personality make it one of the most beloved fish in the hobby — and for good reason.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 100 gallons (larger is always better for active swimmers)
  • Water Temperature: 72–82°F (22–28°C)
  • Salinity: 1.020–1.025 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Water Flow: Moderate to high — tangs love to swim against a current

Lighting

Adaptable to a wide range of reef lighting. Standard reef LED or T5 setups work well. Bright, well-lit tanks mimic their natural Hawaiian reef habitat.

Diet

Primarily herbivorous. Provide a varied diet of dried seaweed (nori) on a clip, high-quality pellets, and frozen foods like mysis and spirulina brine. Regular algae grazing helps keep them healthy and vibrant.

Compatibility

  • Reef Safe: Yes — will not harm corals or invertebrates
  • Tank Mates: Generally peaceful with most reef fish; can be territorial with other tangs, especially similar body shapes. Best kept as the sole tang unless in a very large system (200+ gallons)
  • Invertebrates: Fully compatible with shrimp, crabs, snails, and other CUC members
