Chicago Sunburst Anemone

The Chicago Sunburst Anemone is one of the most visually spectacular color morphs of the Bubble Tip Anemone (Entacmaea quadricolor). Named for its explosive, sunburst-like coloration — typically featuring vivid orange, gold, and red hues radiating from the center — this is a true showpiece for any serious reef keeper. Each specimen is photographed individually, so what you see is what you get.

Animal Details

  • Species: Entacmaea quadricolor (Bubble Tip Anemone)
  • Morph: Chicago Sunburst
  • Size: 5–6 inches body diameter (expanded)
  • Care Level: Intermediate to Expert

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (established reef, 6+ months old)
  • Water Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
  • Ammonia / Nitrite: 0 ppm (anemones are highly sensitive to water quality)
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm preferred
  • Phosphate: <0.05 ppm preferred

Lighting

High-output lighting is strongly recommended — LED reef fixtures (e.g., Radion, Hydra, Kessil) or T5 HO at moderate to high intensity. Anemones host zooxanthellae and rely on photosynthesis for a significant portion of their nutrition. Acclimate slowly to high light to avoid bleaching.

Feeding

Supplement photosynthesis with meaty foods 1–2 times per week: silversides, mysis shrimp, krill, or LRS Reef Frenzy. Target feed directly to the oral disc for best results.

Compatibility

  • Clownfish Host: Yes — BTAs are the natural host for many clownfish species including Ocellaris, Percula, and Maroon Clownfish. Hosting behavior is not guaranteed but is common.
  • Reef Compatibility: Use caution — anemones can and will move around the tank. Ensure powerheads are covered with anemone guards. Keep away from SPS and LPS corals as contact can cause stinging.
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with most reef fish; avoid aggressive fish that may nip at the anemone

Notes on Photos

Photos were taken under reef/blue lighting. Appearance may vary under different lighting and aquarium conditions. The sunburst coloration is most vivid under actinic/blue spectrum lighting.
