Emerald Goniopora

The Emerald Goniopora is a breathtaking flowerpot coral that brings constant motion and lush, garden-like beauty to any reef tank. Its long, swaying polyps — glowing in rich emerald green — create a hypnotic, anemone-like display that few corals can match. Once considered difficult to keep, modern reef-keeping techniques have made Goniopora much more accessible to dedicated hobbyists.

Tank Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons (mature, stable reef)
  • Water Temperature: 76–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Alkalinity: 8–11 dKH
  • Calcium: 400–450 ppm
  • Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
  • Nitrate: 2–10 ppm (benefits from slightly elevated nutrients)
  • Phosphate: 0.05–0.10 ppm

Lighting

Moderate lighting works best — PAR of 75–200. Goniopora can adapt to a range of intensities but should be acclimated gradually. Avoid extreme high-PAR placement. Mid-tank positioning is typically ideal.

Water Flow

Low to moderate, gentle flow. Goniopora polyps need to sway freely — strong direct flow will cause them to retract and stress the coral. Random, indirect flow is preferred.

Feeding

Goniopora benefit greatly from supplemental feeding. Target feed 1–2 times per week with coral-specific foods such as Reef-Roids, Polyp-Booster, or phytoplankton. This is one of the keys to long-term success with this genus.

Compatibility

  • Aggression: Low — polyps are long but not particularly aggressive; maintain a few inches of clearance from neighbors
  • Reef Safe: Yes
  • Tank Mates: Compatible with most reef fish and invertebrates; avoid fish known to nip at coral polyps
